EMI Service

What is the EMI Service?

The EMI (English as a Medium of Instruction) Service assists teachers and researchers at L'Ecole Polytechnique with their English language communication. We provide non-native speakers with advise and guidance on how to improve their use of English in professional contexts such as conferences, classrooms and collaborations.

With English becoming more common in the academic world, it is important that the staff at l'École Polytechnique is able to communicate in effective, efficient and easily-understood ways. Whether you're preparing for a presentation, teaching in English or collaborating with anglophone colleagues, we can help you develop your communication and address any issues you might have.

Who is it for?

The EMI Service is available, free of charge, to all teaching and research staff at l'École Polytechnique. We also work with the Institut Polytechnique's ELEVATE Centre, which provides broader support to academic staff from sister schools.

To know if you are eligible for help from the EMI Service and check our availability, please contact us.

How does it work?

First Steps

The first step to improving is understanding what needs to be done. As such, we recommend all prospective users to fill out a self-assessment form and contact us for a meeting. We will use these assessments to create a personalised plan.

Auditing Lesson

We also recommend you allow us to audit one of your English language lessons, if possible. This will help us see how you communicate in an English environment and give us a better idea of what we need to focus on.

Ongoing support

Once we have an idea of what your level is and have developed a plan, we offer regular sessions to work on key areas and ongoing support, as and when you need it. This is allocated on an individual basis and can be adapted to your needs.

All work with the EMI Service is confidential and discreet.

The Team

The EMI Service is based in the Département de Langues et Cultures, but works with people throughout École Polytechnique.

Our team currently consists of Laura Langlois (head of the English section), who provides oversight, and Kit Jury Morgan, who is working on the ground.

Get in touch to meet us and learn what we can offer!

What will you gain?

The principal outcome of using the EMI Service will be an improvement in your English language communication, both professional and personal.

You will benefit from increased conversational confidence and fluency, a broadened vocabulary and improved grammar and syntax.

This will be of advantage to you in the classroom, in professional collaborations and at international conferences, and will open up new opportunities for research and professional development.
