The AAMS 2024 international conference at École Polytechnique from September 4 to 6, 2024
The 7th edition of the Alloys for Additive Manufacturing Symposium (AAMS) will be held at École polytechnique from September 4 to 6. "It is the first time that this conference will be held in France,” points out Manas Upadhyay, researcher at the Solid Mechanics Laboratory (LMS*) and chair of the conference.
Scientific focus
Additive manufacturing, also known as 3D printing, consists of building an object layer by layer, based on a computer-generated design, by locally melting the raw material using a laser, for example. Additive manufacturing from metals is a growing field of research, attracting a great deal of interest both in terms of fundamental knowledge and industrial applications. The conference will cover the experimental, theoretical, and numerical aspects of this research. Topics covered over the three days, where two sessions will run in parallel, include, for example, the development of new tailor-made alloys, the exploration of new additive manufacturing methods, the engineering and characterization of microstructures, and the use of theoretical and computational approaches to design these microstructures, among others.
A forum for exchange
The AAMS 2024 symposium will give a special place to young researchers, offering them the opportunity to present their work to an international audience – a potential springboard for their careers. Several of them will have the opportunity to give a keynote speech.

In addition, a special session will allow each poster to be presented in the auditorium to all participants, in one slide and in less than a minute. This will enrich the discussions that follow around the posters. "Indeed, one of the aims of this event is to encourage exchanges and discussions, so as to share experiences and identify new research directions, as well as to meet various industrialists from the sector who will also be present," emphasizes Manas Upadhyay. For Institut Polytechnique de Paris, known for its research in mechanics, it's an opportunity to foster reflection on metallurgy, which is a key aspect in advanced processing/manufacturing techniques such as Additive Manufacturing. This event will put IP Paris on the world map of metal additive manufacturing."
