Interview with Patrick Huerre, hydrodynamic instabilities specialist
Patrick Huerre is CNRS Senior Scientist Emeritus and was Professor at Ecole Polytechnique where he co-founded the Hydrodynamics Laboratory with Jean-Marc Chomaz. He has just been awarded the European Society of Mechanics' Fluid Mechanics Prize, for his career devoted to hydrodynamic instabilities.

An ERC Grant for mathematics applied to biology and medicine
Sylvie Méléard, Professor at the Centre for Applied Mathematics and Member of the Institut Universitaire de France, has been awarded an ERC Advanced Grant to develop her project called SINGER. It will study mathematically specific evolutionary dynamics of cell populations, mainly using stochastic models.

Joris van der Hoeven awarded for his work on the complexity of multiplication
The N.G. de Bruijn Medal 2022 has been awarded to Joris van der Hoeven, researcher at the Computer Science Laboratory. The prize was awarded during the Netherlands Mathematical Congress for his research on the complexity of multiplication with David Harvey from the University of New South Wales.

On March 21 and 22, the conference "Aspects of Gravity, Mathematics and Physics" took place. It was organised by the Laurent Schwartz Mathematics Center and the Center for Theoretical Physics for scientists to discuss issues related to gravitation as well as the theory of general relativity and its extensions.

Kirigami helps design new materials
A study carried out at Ecole Polytechnique's Hydrodynamics Laboratory by Sophie Ramananarivo has drawn inspiration from kirigami, the Japanese art of paper cutting, to study materials that can deform when immersed in a fluid.

Workshop on the Smilei code for simulating plasmas
Smilei is an open-source code for plasma simulation, the result of a collaboration between physicists and high-performance computing experts. It can simulate relativistic interactions between lasers and plasma or astrophysical phenomena. The workshop from 9 to 11 March explored this vast field of applications.

Enhanced nanoscale imaging in liquids
Aleix Güell, researcher at Laboratory of Physics of Interfaces and Thin Films, has been awarded an ERC Proof of Concept grant. It will allow him to explore the commercial potential of an imaging technique that combines scanning probe microscopy and Raman spectroscopy to study materials in liquids, from battery to living cells.
