New round of financing for C12, a quantum processors start-up, launched by two X alumni

Launched by two X alumni brothers, C12, a pioneer in the use of carbon nanotubes to build a universal quantum computer, has completed its second round of financing, raising 18 million euros. The start-up is one of five selected by the French Ministry of the Armed Forces as part of the Proqcima program to develop two prototypes of quantum computers.

C12, a spin-off from the Physics Laboratory of the C12, a spin-off from the Physics Laboratory of the École Normale Supérieure de Paris and a pioneer in the use of carbon nanotubes to build a universal quantum computer, has announced the closing of a second round of financing of 18 million euros.

This round of financing marks a new stage in the development of C12, launched in 2020 by two brothers, Matthieu (X2008) and Pierre (M2008) Desjardins, both X alumni. The funds will enable the company to accelerate the design of quantum processors.

After raising $10 million in 2021, the startup has achieved a breakthrough in material for the manufacture of large-scale quantum computers. It has demonstrated both theoretically and empirically that its architecture - the closest realization of a single spin in a vacuum - reduces all sources of noise impacting qubit quality. The qubit number, which is the unit of quantum information processing, indicates the computational power of quantum computers.

At the end of October 2023, the start-up inaugurated its first production line for quantum processors in the heart of Paris: the Quantum Fab. Equipped with several laboratories, including a clean room for semiconductor chip production, this pilot line will enable C12 to manufacture its first quantum products.

Alongside Alice&Bob, co-founded by Thibault Perronin (X2012), Qobly, co-founded by François Perruchot (X87), Quandela co-founded by Pascale Sennellart (X93) and Pasqal, C12 is one of the start-ups selected by the French Ministry of the Armed Forces to develop a functional universal quantum computer as part of the Proqcima project, with funding of 500 million euros as part of the France 2030 plan.
