Conditions
Within the framework of the Gaspard Monge Visiting Professor Program, École polytechnique invites leading international researchers and professors to join its laboratories for a research and teaching stay starting from October 2026 onwards. During their stay, visiting professors will develop their research activities in close collaboration with a host laboratory and contribute to the institution’s academic life. They will be expected to deliver a course or seminar (approximately four hours per month), including an inaugural lecture.
Visiting professors may also be accompanied during their stay by a PhD student or postdoctoral researcher.
The program is open to:
- Professors and researchers with at least five years of experience after the completion of their PhD, currently affiliated with a university or research institution outside France;
- Researchers of any nationality, including French researchers employed abroad.
The program is not open to postdoctoral researchers as principal applicants.
The selection criteria are the following :
- The scientific excellence and career of the candidate,
- The quality of the scientific project to be carried out during the visiting professorship, its innovative character, and its expected impact,
- The relevance of the scientific project with regards to the strategy of l’École Polytechnique and the host laboratory,
- The project’s fit with the local scientific community (l’X and IP Paris)
- The quality of the intended teaching or training project
- The perspective of a lasting collaboration between the hosting laboratory at l’X and the laureate, and his or her home institution and laboratory.
The length of stay is 4 to 12 months. The visit may be split into two periods of at least two months each, within an 18-month period.
The Gaspard Monge Visiting Professor Program offers many benefits:
- Each visiting professor will receive a monthly allowance of € 3,500 € during the visiting professorship at École Polytechnique. (The salary of the visiting professor will continue to be paid by his or her home university.)
- A budget for the organization of events (e.g. conferences, seminars, summer schools for PhD and Master’s students) during the professor’s visit. The budget for these activities, which are part of the select criteria, must be specified in the letter of application.
- Accommodation close to the École Polytechnique campus, which can also accommodate the researcher's family.
- If a doctoral student/postdoc is involved in the project, he/she will be reimbursed for living expenses up to a maximum of €1,500 per month. He/she must remain employed by his/her home institution.
- Support in administrative formalities before and during the stay.
Please note that only the incurring costs for the visiting professor will be covered. Incurring costs for family members are not covered.
