Gaspard Monge Visiting Professor Program

The Gaspard Monge Visiting Professor Program allows top-level researchers from around the world to join École Polytechnique for a period of 4 to 12 months to conduct research in one of the institution’s 23 laboratories and teach as a visiting professor. The program is supported by the Fondation de l'École polytechnique.

The Gaspard Monge Visiting Professor Program is open to international scientists, whose research relates to the scientific fields of École Polytechnique’s 23 laboratories.

Conditions

As part of the Gaspard Monge Visiting Professor Program, École Polytechnique will welcome one or more researchers or professors from October 2025 onwards. During their stay, the visiting professors will continue their research in the laboratories of École Polytechnique and will be expected to teach four hours per month (course or seminar). An inaugural lecture is also part of the Gaspard Monge Visiting Professor Programme. 
Candidates for this program can also ask to be accompanied by a PhD student or post-doc during the visit. 

  • The program is open to professors and researchers who have at least 5 years of experience since obtaining their doctorate and who are currently working in a university abroad (outside France).
    Researchers of any nationality are eligible to apply, including French researchers employed at a university abroad.
  • The program is not open to postdoctoral researchers.

Selection criteria

The selection criteria are the following : 

  • The scientific excellence and career of the candidate,
  • The quality of the scientific project to be carried out during the visiting professorship, its innovative character, and its expected impact,
  • The relevance of the scientific project with regards to the strategy of l’École Polytechnique, of IP Paris, and the host laboratory,
  • The project’s fit with the local scientific community (l’X and IP Paris)
  • The quality of the intended teaching or training project
  • The perspective of a lasting collaboration between the hosting laboratory at l’X and the laureate, and his or her home institution and laboratory.

The length of stay is 4 to 12 months. The visit may be split into two periods of at least two months each, within an 18-month period.

The Gaspard Monge Visiting Professor Program offers many benefits:

  • Each visiting professor will receive a monthly allowance of € 3,500 € during the visiting professorship at École Polytechnique. (The salary of the visiting professor will continue to be paid by his or her home university.)
  • A budget for the organization of events (e.g. conferences, seminars, summer schools for PhD and Master’s students) during the professor’s visit. The budget for these activities, which are part of the select criteria, must be specified in the letter of application.
  • Accommodation close to the École Polytechnique campus, which can also accommodate the researcher's family.
  • If a doctoral student/postdoc is involved in the project, he/she will be reimbursed for living expenses up to a maximum of €1,000 per month. He/she must remain employed by his/her home institution.
  • Support in administrative formalities before and during the stay.

Please note that only the incurring costs for the visiting professor will be covered. Incurring costs for family members are not covered.

Application

The application is to be written in English and must contain the following information:

  • A statement of interest for the position, describing the research project the candidate would like to carry out at École polytechnique (maximum 5 pages),
  • A detailed curriculum vitae, including a list of 5 publications (to be commented on in brief),
  • A presentation of the teaching project, that the visiting professor will implement at École polytechnique, in English, at the graduate/master's level (maximum 2 pages)
  • A letter of support from the head of the department or the head of the laboratory of the candidate’s home university,
  • A presentation of the teaching project that the candidate intends to carry out at École Polytechnique (maximum 2 pages). Within the framework of the Gaspar Monge Programme, each visiting professor is expected to teach in English at graduate/master level (class, seminar, or MOOC).
  • Suggestion for the duration of the visit,
  • A detailed presentation of the budget required for the candidate's stay and for the organization and financing of events.
  • A letter of support from the Director of the hosting laboratory and the Director of the Teaching and Research Department.

École Polytechnique is a bilingual institution (French and English). To apply to the Gaspard Monge Visiting Professorship program English proficiency is mandatory. French language proficiency is not required.

Application Deadline: June 20, 2025

The Admission Committee will announce the results in July 2025.
